Ekuthuleni Primary School

Bester, Inanda, KZN

Ekuthuleni Primary was our first official LEARN beneficiary school, with their library launched on 3 December 2013 and book corners established in September 2015. In July 2019, we undertook a complete revamp of this library, with new shelving, paint and a boost of books, proudly sponsored by the AES Charitable Trust. The opening ceremony on 19 July 2019 was a heart-warming reflection of the passion that lies within this school.

Ekuthuleni has taken the utmost care in looking after their library, making full use of the books and opportunities presented to them. This led us to launching our 1st LEARN Foundation Phase library on 11 October 2024, a significant day for Ekuthuleni Primary as their long term dream became a reality with this beautiful library for Grade R-3. We celebrated with key sponsor, Toys R Us, the DOE, the SGB, teachers, volunteers and invited guests. From dancing to poetry and speeches, this was a day to remember!

Transformation takes teamwork

We have been on an amazing journey with this school. From library and literacy workshops to covering and shelving books, we value the collaborative effort of the teachers actively involved in moving their school forward. The reading club and library monitors meet regularly, and each year the school takes part in the annual Phendulani Literacy Quiz. A noticeable difference can be seen since the Foundation Phase since the introduction of English as their main language of instruction, with an increase in the level of reading and overall English marks. We honour Mr Sambulo Khalala, recently retired principal of Ekuthuleni who proactively helped us transform this school and work towards a shared vision of raising readers to become leaders!

“We are so grateful for the books covered in plastic and for training our teachers on the use of the library. Our children have developed a love for reading due to your valuable contribution.”

— MR SAMBULO KHALALA, PRINCIPAL
