Chesterville, KZN
On 11 March 2025, ahead of South African Library Week, we celebrated the grand opening of the library and book corners at H.P. Ngwenya Public Primary School with key sponsor H&M South Africa, who chose The LEARN Project as part of their ‘A Bag for Change’ initiative, which encourages sustainability while supporting local communities.
In a vibrant handover assembly, the school showed their gratitude with inspiring speeches, dramatic arts displays and a vibrant celebration through dance and musical items. This was attended by learners, teachers, the SGB, the H&M team, the Director of ELITS, KZN DOE representatives, The LEARN Project and iThemba Lethu NGO. As a result of this partnership, H.P. Ngwenya Public Primary has received a fully functional school library and classroom book corners, creating an inspiring space for young minds to grow and learn.

Transformation takes teamwork
This transformation was no small feat, as we took on the challenge of converting a run down room into a fully renovated and functional library. Many challenges were faced, such as a huge borer problem, where every existing shelf in the room needed to be safely removed and damaged existing books discarded due to borer eaten pages. Flooring was repaired, an air conditioner installed, painting, electricals, interior decor and customised tables and chairs added to create a welcoming environment. Sustainable craftsmanship with South African flag curtains and library bags made from repurposed H&M campaign banners, made by the Bhambayi Sewing Group, add a special touch with locally relevant literacy resources to brighten up the room.
Set up was assisted by the teachers, library committee and library monitors who all trained on our relevant literacy and leadership courses to ensure that they were well prepared to activate their new library! A dedicated sensory therapy room provides a safe space for additional learner support, including story boxes, sensory resources, educational games, and puzzles. This room will be used by the dynamic team from iThemba Lethu.
”“H&M South Africa is honoured to support The LEARN Project in creating environments where children can develop a love for reading and learning. Education is one of the most powerful tools we can provide to our future leaders, and we are excited to be part of initiatives that have a lasting and positive impact on our communities.”
— CAROLINE NELSON, H&M SOUTH AFRICA COUNTRY MANAGER
