Siyaphumelela Primary School

Amatata, Inanda, KZN

High up in the Inanda mountains is Siyaphumelela Primary School. The 19 September 2019 was a significant day for the teachers, learners and community as they received the gift of a library filled with books and resources, proudly sponsored by the AES Charitable Trust.

The opening celebration touched many hearts, as we listened to shared readings, dramatised story and incredible singing, as well as a powerful dance demonstration by the school’s talented traditional dance group. Learners and special guests joined in the outdoor assembly marking a significant day in the history of the school.

Transformation takes teamwork

After months of planning and preparation, an old, run-down classroom was renovated into a bright and welcoming library with beautiful shelving, tables and chairs. A joint team effort by LEARN volunteers, teachers and library monitors ensured that the set-up of this library and classroom book corners was achieved in one day! We appreciated the assistance of two learners from Crawford who were completing their community service hours with LEARN. Teachers and library monitors completed their LEARN Library training course and were inspired to create a culture of reading within their school. Their motivation was encouraging, as was their heartfelt appreciation of this gift to their school.

“Thank you for the whole new world behind the yellow door. Thank you to LEARN for helping us have such a rich and beautiful library. Reading relates to everyone and we hope to create a love of reading.”
