Bright Future Special School

Newlands, KZN

The first Interactive Sensory library in KZN was established at Bright Future Special School on 24 November 2022, proudly sponsored by Toys R Us. Interactive, engaging and educational, a room filled with wonder, joy and tactile experiences, making reading and learning memorable and fun.

We celebrated the grand opening of this one-of-a-kind library in a moving assembly, with special guests, in the newly built school hall. A school abounding in talent, as we got to appreciate wire and bead work, arts and crafts and a rich performance by the schools cultural dancers and singers. A learner with Autism stood confidently on stage and shared a reading of the ‘Let’s Educate A Rainbow Nation’ poem and it was evident that this resource was going to be well looked after and valued. The library has since been visited by the Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga and MEC for KZN education, Hon. Miss Mbalenhle Frazer and was recognised for its excellence.

Transformation takes teamwork

What a joy it was to work with the team from Toys R Us and teachers of Bright Future — from book drives and book covering parties to teacher training workshops. Every area was planned to the finest detail to create this dream sensory library. Set up week was so rewarding as we brought this vision to life and created a sensory world of wonder and exploration through a variety of learning experiences, providing opportunities for all learners to enjoy the power of a book.

Think colourful and creative interactive zones for exploration within the library, bringing stories to life and making reading fun, through a puppet theatre room, story baskets with tactile story aids, Fiction and Non-Fiction books, audio books, pop up books, signing resources, a day and night light zone and sensory educational play zone, with Lego wall and variety of educational puzzles and games to boost story themes.

This library has been dedicated to the life of Mr Sipho Nkosi, visionary leader and principal of Bright Future Special School.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your generosity in the sponsorship and establishment of the sensory library at our school. The library will enhance the learners’ ability to learn independently and we promise to fully utilize the resources provided. We are indeed anticipating a brighter future for our disabled learners.”
