On 4 September 2024, the sensory library at Ethembeni School was opened and celebrated, proudly sponsored by key sponsor, AES Charitable Trust. Ethembeni is a school for the physically disabled and visually impaired and this sensory library was specially designed and created for learners with special needs. A vibrant assembly, marked this momentous day with an array of dancing, singing and dramatization by talented learners as a display of their gratitude. Guests included teachers, learners and principal from Ethembeni, The Department of Education, LEARN team, DPHS learners and teachers, Esjay sportswear and other contributors.
We honour DPHS educator, Pieter Mouton and Ethembeni Librarian, Seluleko Ngubane for taking the initiative to actively do something to create awareness around the schools dream for a library. Together, they took on the challenge of completing The New York marathon and through their efforts, the dream became a reality.

Transformation takes teamwork
This transformation was made possible by the collective time and effort of many who came together to fulfil one dream. Months of collecting books, led to a vast book collection, from fiction and non-fiction books, to tactile, sensory and auditory books. Story boxes with visual aids bring stories to life and there is even a braille section and projector screen.
The room was completely renovated with new shelving, educational resources, tables and chairs, fresh paint and an additional expansion of a sensory therapy room curated for learners with special needs, in collaboration with the schools OT and Speech therapists. DPHS learners and teachers assisted the LEARN team with the sorting and set-up of books, as well as a team from the Logos Hope ship that was visiting Durban. How wonderful to have the help of people from all over the world, coming together to make a difference.
