Sogidi Primary School

Tongaat, KZN

The LEARN Project celebrated International Book Giving Day at Sogidi Primary School on 14 February 2024. The 25th LEARN beneficiary school to receive the gift of knowledge and literacy through the establishment of a beautiful new, functional, and sustainable Intersen Library and book corners in each of the Foundation Phase classrooms to create a language rich environment conducive to learning and reading. Together with the backing of key sponsor, Ignition Group, a company passionate about making a meaningful impact in the communities they serve, The LEARN Project made this long-term dream of the schools a reality, officiated in a moving launch day assembly filled with musical and creative items and speeches from Ignition Group, LEARN and The Department of Education, as well as invited guests.

This library is dedicated to Sogidi Principal, Mrs N Sibisi and Educator, Miss S Mbhele who tragically passed away in an accident in April 2024. May this library continue the legacy of this remarkable principal and educator and unlock all the hopes and dreams of the Sogidi Primary educators and learners who enter it.

Transformation takes teamwork

A run-down classroom in urgent need of repair was identified, and so began the transformation journey. From replacing windows, to repairing and painting the room, from brand new library shelving to tables and chairs, this transformation was so inspiring. Close attention to detail was given in the preparing and covering of the vast array of 1423 library books and 300 Foundation Phase books. The library includes a variety of educational games, puzzles, and literacy resources, as well as cushions, literacy charts and decor. All this would not be possible without the incredible support of our LEARN volunteers and Ignition Group team and teachers, who selflessly gave of their time.

To ensure the library will be well used and looked after, The LEARN Project trained every teacher in the school on their library training course, ‘Welcome to the library’, as well as empowering a teacher librarian and 12 library monitors who are now the reading ambassadors of their school. Certificates were presented at the special launch day assembly. In true Ignition Group style, their team arrived to assist us with final touches on the day and to celebrate this milestone in the official opening.

“We are most grateful for the difference you havemade to our school. We strongly believe there will be great improvement in reading with understanding, new vocabulary gained, improved academic performance and attendancewill improve because every learner will want to visit thelibrary. We appreciate your generous sponsorship.”

— MRS NOKUTHULA SIBISI, PRINCIPAL
