Umzinyathi, Inanda, KZN
Singing and dancing echoed through the village and history was made as Hlengimpilo Primary School’s first library and classroom book corners were established on 7 September 2018, proudly sponsored by the AES Charitable Trust.
Library monitors were awarded their badges and The LEARN Project was acknowledged by DR Barney Mthembu, Deputy Director General from the KZN Department of Education for the quality and standard of the library. A momentous day with teachers dressed in yellow as a sign of support of The LEARN Project, and guests cheered at the cutting of the ribbon, marking the official opening of this beautiful library.

Transformation takes teamwork
Volunteers and teachers from Hlengimpilo assisted us with the covering of books and library set up. All teachers in the school attended the Library teacher training course and received a certificate on completion. Librarian Nokwanda was trained by the LEARN team and is committed to her role, managing the library and making weekly visits to the book corners for dedicated story sessions. She co-ordinates literacy days such as the World Book Day celebration on 23 April 2019 with powerful guest speaker, Dr Gcina Mhlope. We just loved the sound of children’s voices that echoed through the valley — “KZN, the province that reads!”
”“I would like to thank LEARN for their immense role in the sponsorship of our new library and book corners. There has been an increased dedication to literacy as our library promotes reading and provides access to information, knowledge, deep thinking and lively discussions.”
