Maphumulo, Inanda, KZN
After months of preparation and ready for the opening in April 2020, schools were instructed to close for COVID-related lockdown. A library launch delayed, yet not denied. In keeping with Covid safety protocols, we launched Joel Primary School’s library and book corners on 17 November 2020, proudly sponsored by the AES Charitable Trust. It may have been a small celebration in size, however, in heart it was full and electric.
Members from The Department of Education attended, including the Circuit Manager, ELITS Library Head and Head of Curriculum Development. It was an honour to receive a special vote of thanks for this library and to be celebrated for the work that we do and the standard of excellence we uphold. A highlight was being presented with the KZN DOE Reading Strategy manual and Reading Promotion handbook.

Transformation takes teamwork
Our biggest challenge to date — equipping and setting up a library and classroom book corners in under four hours, with the opening celebration the same day. This was made possible due to the sterling effort from our LEARN team and every volunteer and Joel teacher who helped cover books and set up on the day. We honour Mr Mchunu, the school’s dedicated principal, who went the extra mile from start to completion of this project. It really does take teamwork to achieve great things! Teachers were trained on the use of the library and a librarian was appointed to run the library with the assistance of library monitors and a library committee.
”“We are very strong on collaboration, so what you are doing with your collaborative efforts with us is not only helping this community but it is also building the future for all children and investing in children’s lives. So, thank you from the bottom of the Department’s heart”
— MRS NTOMBI NGIDI, ELITS PINETOWN DISTRICT COORDINATOR,
