Kasturba Gandhi Primary School

Inanda, KZN

The Kasturba Gandhi Primary School library was opened on 4 December 2015 after waiting a year whilst the library room was built by the Department of Education. Once ready, The LEARN Project committed to filling the space with resources and books, making it a functional library. We went on to establish 18 book corners in the Foundation Phase in April 2016.

In keeping with our long-term vision of upgrading libraries every few years, we later set about revamping this library with new shelving, a variety of books, beautiful new tables and chairs, a bright rug and fresh coat of paint to transform the room. The revamp was complete on 25 July 2019 thanks to sponsorship from the AES Charitable Trust.

Launch guests included fellow LEARN school librarians and principals as well as KZN Department of Education representatives. Together, we celebrated with a heartfelt assembly accompanied with dancing, musical items by the school’s Scouts and inspiring speeches.

Transformation takes teamwork

LEARN is delighted that this school has such a committed library team, led by head librarian and LEARN library ambassador, Nomfundo Mthethwa, who is passionate about literacy, with a vibrant approach to teaching and learning. Kasturba welcomed a second librarian, Nokuthula Ndawo, to the library to assist Nomfundo and we are delighted with the growth and development of this space! The library has a group of library monitors who fulfil their duties with excellence and the library is always neat and busy. Team work enabled us to clear out the old store room, install new book shelves and set up this beautiful library. We now host many training workshops in this space due to its size and resources.

“Our learners have benefitted greatly from the books and resources donated to us by The LEARN Project. Our school library will not only shape a generation of young readers and critical thinkers, but will uplift the community at large.”

— NOMFUNDO MTHETHWA, LIBRARIAN
