The LEARN Project and key sponsor Toys R Us celebrated the hopes and dreams of the community in the remote area of Maphepheteni, as Mthubi Primary School’s first school library and classroom book corners were officially opened on 15 June 2021. The day was commemorated with entertainment by the school’s drum majorettes, traditional dancers and choir, together with inspiring speeches by key note speakers.
On this day, the community, including representatives from The LEARN Project, Toys R Us, SAPS, KZN DOE and the school’s SGB came together to celebrate new beginnings, as well as a special visit from the tribal chief of the area. Badges were presented to the library monitors and a highlight was the sound of unity as our National Anthem echoed through the mountains.

Transformation takes teamwork
The new learning space received a fresh coat of paint thanks to sponsor, Prodec Paints, and the previously damaged flooring was fixed with brand new carpeting sponsored by Top Carpets and Floors, Pinetown, creating a warm and vibrant learning environment for the children. Teachers enjoyed a practical workshop on the use and function of the library and two librarians were trained to run the library and ensure daily use for learners. An interactive workshop was held for eleven library monitors, who also assisted us with the shelving of books and library set up, together with the Toys R Us and LEARN teams. Cushions and library bags were made out of discontinued Toys R Us banners and fabric, adding a special touch from our key sponsor.
”“This Education Department has taken me to the length and breadth of this Province, but for me seeing myself be part of such a celebration, of receiving a library in such an area, really makes me feel that I am part of a history that touches people’s lives.”
