Tongaat School for LSEN

Tongaat, KZN

The second LEARN interactive sensory library was opened at Tongaat School for LSEN, proudly sponsored by Toys R Us. Launched on 28 September 2023, with over 1000 books, sensory items and educational resources donated and classified accordingly. Interactive, engaging and educational, a room filled with wonder, mixed with tactile experiences and interactive zones within the library that bring stories to life, this is a library that exudes joy and aligns with the Toys R Us tagline, ‘Championing Joy’.

This was an uplifting morning, filled with inspiring speeches and creative items presented by the learners, ending in a tour of the library that had everyone eager to read, play and explore more.

Transformation takes teamwork

They say it takes a village to raise a child and this really does ring true when transforming a school through the power of books and literacy. It takes collaboration and teamwork to bring about meaningful change and this was evident in the remarkable room makeover for Tongaat School for LSEN.

The joining of hands in the preparation process meant this library set up was quick and efficient. Teachers and learners came alongside The LEARN Project team to assist with the set-up of the newly established sensory library and placement of books and sensory items on shelves, making this a collective joint effort. Teacher’s enjoyed our sensory library workshop and gained new ideas for making reading come alive in their school. As always, the Toys R Us team helped cover the many children’s books in plastic and assisted with the wall vinyl’s of Geoffrey the giraffe and other fun elements and final touches.

“I would like to thank The LEARN Project, Toys R Us and all who sponsored our library. We are humbled to be one of the schools which was recognised, bringing good change to our learners, encouraging learning through experience. Our learners are gaining a lot, and we do see the good impact our new SensoryLibrary is having for our learners.”
