Thusanang Primary School

Molapo, Soweto, Gauteng

The first LEARN library in Soweto was launched on 6 June 2022 at Thusanang Primary School, in collaboration with Lifting Dreams and sponsored by the AES Charitable Trust.

The day was celebrated in a special assembly with the learners, teachers and guests from The Department of Education, Lifting Dreams, LEARN and the School Governing Body. The energy, excitement and joy on the day was contagious! A kaleidoscope of song, dance, and spoken word moved us all. A heartfelt thank you speech from a learner for receiving the lifetime gift of a library and books, leaving us with the words, “Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination.” Here’s to a generation of big dreamers with big imaginations.

Transformation takes teamwork

After months of preparation and coordination from the home of The LEARN Project, in Durban, we were ready to take on the challenge of transforming a run down classroom into a functional library. Books were sorted, processed, covered in plastic and accessioned into a register. The renovation, construction and painting makeover of the room was followed by a work party together with Lifting Dreams. Teamwork lead to dream work and we managed to complete this beautiful library and book corner project in record time. Teachers completed the ‘Welcome to the library’ course and library monitors were educated, equipped and empowered into their new leadership roles.

“We would like to thank The LEARN Project and The AES Charitable Trust for creating a library and reading corners for our school. Our learners are now able to read independently and fluently. It has uplifted the standard of reading and given our school a dignity that it never had.”
