The LEARN Project partnered with Ignition Group to set up and establish 19 beautiful book corners with 1440 beautiful books and educational resources at Windy Heights Primary School in Umlazi District which were officially unveiled and celebrated on the 17 August 2023 by a special assembly that featured speeches from guests from the Department of Education, Ignition Group, The LEARN Project and optometrist and past learner Ayanda Mthembu, as well as performances by the talented learners.
Fast forward to the 14 February 2025 when we opened the Windy Heights library in celebration of International Book Giving Day. An unforgettable day filled with dancing, singing, storytelling, book reviews, poetry and inspiring speeches, one of our biggest library make overs to date. Home to over 2000 books, iPads for digital library resources and educational games, this is a library that is going to impact many lives.

Transformation takes teamwork
Teachers and learners joined our LEARN and Ignition teams in the proactive set-up process of each classroom transformation and great fun was had by all. From the cleaning and set up of book shelves, carpets and cushions, to the stock taking and placement of books and literacy charts, each classroom is now a bright and engaging space for learning and reading. Teachers enjoyed a literacy training workshop and already positive progress is being noted in the improvement of reading levels within the Foundation Phase.
The library set up was a joint team effort, with The LEARN team, volunteers, teachers, library monitors and Ignition Group. From clearing out the store room, to cleaning shelves, setting out books and putting up posters and resources, this was a significant transformation, resulting in the most beautiful, functional and sustainable library. Books were also covered in plastic by LEARN volunteers and Ignition Group in preparation for the library launch. Library monitors now wear their badges with pride and teachers are now confident to make the most of their beautiful library after completing the ‘Welcome to the library’ training course. We honour four Reddam House Umhlanga learners, Kirsty, Shea, Megan and Isabella for all the time they dedicated to covering hundreds of books for the Windy Heights library for their President Award hours.
”“Our heartfelt gratitude for the 19 classroom book corners generously established at our school. Your donation will take the school very far interms of supporting our journey in enhancingchildren’s literacy. Thank you for such a kind gesture!”
